A capacity field took to the trails this weekend for the opening round of the highly anticipated Thetford Racing Winter Series at Santon Downham.
The first round always brings out tight racing from the region’s top riders as they battle to kick the series off well, and this year it was no different with a fast and flowing course in an area that’s somewhat of a hidden gem in the local mountain biking scene.
In the 3 hour senior category, Andrew Cockburn of Newdale Cycles held off tough competition early on from Seb Herrod of ROTOR Race Team to win with an eventual buffer of nearly 5 minutes. Local legend Paul Ashby of Kings Lynn MTB had to settle for second in the 3 hour vets category behind an impressive Dan Howe. Sarah Hewitt, also of ROTOR Race Team, took the win in the 3hour vets female category as the only lady to complete 6 laps.
The hotly contested 1.5hour vets category didn’t disappoint, with the podium separated by a mere 41 seconds. Paul Groombridge of Push Sport / Barford Van Hire managed to hold on to take the top spot ahead of Chris Hunter and Ben Findlay. An untouchable William Dorsett took the win in the senior category, 2 minutes ahead of Hackney GT’s Adam French, with CC Breckland’s Adam Cross completing the podium after rallying on the final lap to stay ahead off Chris Harley of HKR XC Team and Team LCUK’s Duncan Ryan.
In the 1.5hour women’s categories, Elvita Branch of Sussed Out Suspension/Mondraker UK took the top spot in the seniors with fellow team mate Laura Sampson leading the way in the veterans.
William Gell of Numplumz Mountain Bikers headed a strong Junior field, followed by Jack Bent and Ben Hoyle of HKR XC Team in third.
Entry is still open for the remaining rounds. The second round is on the 9th December at West Bilney Woods.
